Boeing and TAM Announce Deal for Four 777-300ERsI’m gearing up for two back-to-back monster weeks.

Tomorrow morning, I was invited to present the story of my chain of cafés at a local university.

Tomorrow afternoon, I’m presenting a top-notch leadership development program I developed with my partners to one of the biggest educational groups in the world.

Ah, the adventures they promised when I was a kid…

This, in normal circumstances, would make for some killer stress.

But I’m excited. Very excited.

What’s different?

Two things.

First, knowing my purpose. Two, chunking the work effectively.

Purpose provides all the drive you’ll ever need in your life. Sames for your clients.

All this work is part of my destiny. I’ve been expecting this. And likewise, it’s nothing compared to the work that’s about to show up.

This is just training wheels.

Chunking effectively allows me to slice up the job at hand and combine it with similar other tasks to be way more productive than I would by working linearly.

Purpose is the engine that powers me up. Chunking helps me to organize the work so that it’s more manageable for MY brain (you’d probably do it differently than I do).

Stop for a second and imagine how the President of the United States or Prime Minister of Britain can handle the sheer volume of work facing them?

Why don’t they quit? Why did they want that job in the first place?

Purpose explains why. Chunking explains how.

And the fact that they leverage the help of so many others on their team simply amplifies this.

How much work can you take on? How much makes you squeak?

I bet that, with just a few tweaks, you’d be able to handle double the load.

Which tweaks will those be?

Tripping Out In Rio

rioI know, I’ve been gone all week!

I had to take a business trip to Rio. In fact, I’m still here. Going home in a few.

Grueling schedule. Lots to do. No time.

And there’s no way I was going to send you a message from my iPhone!

Within hours I’ll be back home.

Don’t you find it amazing how, these days, we can just move around that easily?

One moment you’re somewhere. Few hours later, you’re at a different latitude.

That blows my mind.

Have you also noticed how time gets distorted on trips?

It is, literally, trippy as heck.

At the end of the day, I wonder whether what I did at the beginning of the day actually happened that day or the day before.

Has that happened to you?

Why do you think that happens?

How is time anchored in your life? What are your reference points for it?

How do you know what day of the week it is?

I, for one, have started asking myself those questions.

I haven’t explored and experimenting how we process time as deeply as other topics over the past ten years.

1776 All Over Again

This means a lot to many people in the United States.

Talk about an anchor!

Symbols are among the most powerful anchors that exist. They call forth states like few other triggers.

Anchors are like the icons on your computer. Double-click them and the states show up, invariably, unless you uninstall them — AKA, collapse.

Stop for a second to answer this question: Are you skilled at anchoring?

So, what’s your answer?

.

.

If you’ve answered anything other than “yes,” you’re mistaken.

You’re an ace at anchoring. We all are. It’s the natural way our nervous system operates and learns: it creates links between stimuli.

If you don’t believe you’re great at anchoring, that means you probably want to use it voluntarily to control someone’s state or strategy.

What will come to your help at this moment?

The #1 NLP skill: observation. And its cousing: calibration.

Pay attention. Notice when people have repeated or patterned reactions to something you do.

You’re already anchoring people. You simply don’t know when or how.

Watch. Listen.

These are your two critical assets.

The Power Of Beliefs

This is one of the most intense message I will ever share with you.

But it’s the most important. Bar none. Consider it a master class in beliefs.

But why now?

Let me tell you the story.

Yesterday, I had a coaching session with a young entrepreneur who’s getting started in business.

He’s been receiving my daily emails at DailyNLP (http://dailynlp.com). Two days ago, he reached out to me for help.

We scheduled his session for yesterday and made it happen.

Basically, the issue he wanted handled was that he couldn’t get himself to network and connect with people. He was stuck in his shell and wasn’t making the necessary connections to get his business off the ground.

Within three minutes of talking with him, it was obvious that a disempowering belief was at play.

You know, that nasty internal dialogue that sucks the life out of us like a vampire.

The instant I spotted it, Belief Relief was on.

Twenty minutes later, you should have seen his face.

Brand new guy. Something had changed. Unlocked. Unleashed.

He was going to connect with people now.

Potential partners. Clients. Anybody.

Now, the important part is not what happened DURING our session. It’s what will happen from this point forward.

His new direction. His new destiny. His new life.

Now, can you imagine how many people are stuck right this very second?

Stop and ponder over that.

What would happen if you and I were able to help them get out of that mode?

What would happen if you and I could help them get unstuck?

Just imagine the energy release this would enable…

I want to be able to do it. In a second, I’ll tell you how we can work together for that to happen.

But first, let’s reframe a term.

Limiting Beliefs??

I dislike the notion of “limiting” beliefs.

The truth is, all beliefs are limiting in one way or another. They open and close doors in our nervous system. They are, in a way, gatekeepers.

I suggest that we use the term “disempowering” instead. Some limiting beliefs are empowering. At the same time, some seemingly great beliefs can be disempowering.

For example…

Someone might have the limiting belief that taking drugs is bad for you, and that belief may be tremendously empowering.

Likewise, another person might believe that everyone has a noble intent. That belief might prevent her from firing destructive employees. That would be an example of a positive belief turned disempowering.

Make sense?

So what determines whether a belief is empowering or disempowering?

The Context That Tilts Beliefs

Beliefs, in and of themselves, don’t tilt one way or another.

They become empowering or disempowering based on what you want.

In other words, your goals.

When you decide what you want, your beliefs will either support or hinder you in getting it.

But that’s not all. There’s more you have to take into account.

In addition, you must consider your full ecology. A belief may support you in the context of a single goal, and hinder you in the context of your entire life.

For instance, you may want an extra $100,00.

What’s the straight line to get it? Assault an old lady and take it from her.

Believing that you can take other people’s belongings is tremendously empowering in the context of that goal. It definitely supports you in achieving it quickly and swiftly.

However, in the larger context of your life, that belief can result in you going to jail. Therefore, it becomes disempowering in that larger context.

It also reveals that the goal is a bit more complex than originally phrased.

It really is “make an extra $100 AND stay out of jail.” And you might discover a few additional distinctions on the goal as you explore it.

By the way, this is an excellent exercise to go through when you’re having a hard time hitting your goals.

Maybe there are some hidden, unconscious criteria that are slowing you down.

Seek them out, become aware of them and reverse them.

YOUR GOALS define whether beliefs are empowering or disempowering. To be effective, you have to be able to open and close these “doors” at will.

In a second, I’ll tell you more about the direct impact beliefs have on what you do. You may have a little “aha” moment.

It’s a really simple model and I’m sure you’ll find it as useful as I do.

But let’s do a quick summary first.

– Beliefs are gatekeepers in our nervous system. They open and close doors of possibility.

– Our goals determine whether an open or closed door is empowering or disempowering.

Cool so far? Let’s move on.

I’m going to take you up a notch so we can take a look at the direct — and I mean direct — impact beliefs have on what we do.

Before we look at that model, I want you to pay attention to a little secret that makes all the difference when working with beliefs.

Beliefs Are Linguistic Phenomena

Practitioners of NLP have published a great many books. Many of them are great. Some of them suck. Most of them are about therapeutic interventions (as opposed to modeling geniuses).

Here’s a little fallacy I’ve encountered several times over the past 15 years.

In some of these books, you’ll read about interventions to change beliefs that involve “making a picture of the belief.”

*LOUD BUZZER SOUND*

Sorry there, slick, not gonna happen. Well, it may happen, but it’s going to be a complete waste of time.

Why?

Because beliefs are linguistic phenomena.

How the heck are we going to picture language?

Are we really going to visualize words hanging in the air and read off of them in our mind?

Are we going to swish pictures of words?

Think that’s going to be effective?

Rarely.

Visual ain’t the channel to work with beliefs.

When we create/pick up/condition a belief, we either:

1. Hear someone say it to us, or
2. Say it to ourselves, out loud or mentally

Here’s the right channel to work with beliefs: AUDITORY! More specifically, auditory digital, ie, in spoken and heard words.

The Chain Of Action

Now, let’s hop on the helicopter and get a sky-high view of what drives our actions — and consequently, our results — and see where beliefs fit on the food chain.

Let’s begin with the practical side: getting results. That’s what achievement is all about, right?

1. ACTIONS >> RESULTS

Pretty obvious, no? Our actions drive the results we get. So what drives our actions?

2. STATE >> ACTIONS >> RESULTS

Tony Robbins says the most important skill we can master in our lifetime is the ability to manage our states.

This is why.

Our state will determine what actions we take, which in turn will determine what results we get.

So what drives state?

*drum roll*

That’s right.

3. BELIEF >> STATE >> ACTIONS >> RESULTS

Of course, in reality there are more variables involved. (Remember, this is just a model. It’s meant to be useful, not 100% accurate.) Physiology is a key driver of state in the short term. But you can’t sustain an empowering state in the longer term unless it’s supported by belief.

So belief drives the critical component that determines our actions.

More Impact Of Belief

It gets better.

The word “state” also refers to how we feel. That means that our feelings are determined to a large extent by our beliefs.

If someone feels depressed long-term, it’s because of beliefs.

If someone feels anxious long-term, it’s because of beliefs.

If someone feels angry long-term, it’s because of beliefs.

Also, if someone feels thrilled about being alive, it’s because of beliefs.

If someone feels excited about being in a relationship, it’s because of beliefs.

If someone feels determined to build their business all the way to success, it’s because of beliefs.

I’ll sum that up to:

YOUR EXPERIENCE IN LIFE (AND ENJOYMENT THEREOF) DEPENDS ON YOUR BELIEFS.

Quick Recap

Let’s recap really quickly. We just learned a few more distinctions:

1. Beliefs are auditory phenomena. No pictures!
2. Beliefs determine what we do and, as such, the results we get.
3. Beliefs determine how we feel and, as such, our experience of life.

Learning how to work with beliefs is, in my opinion, one of the most important asset someone can acquire.

If you’re a coach (life or sports), manager or parent, it’s simply a must. You have to know how to handle them elegantly.

Over the last 10 years, I’ve developed a format that has consistently helped my clients and myself relieve disempowering beliefs and install empowering ones.

In most cases, the process is fun (often, it’s hilarious), works quickly, and is easy to teach and learn.

But let’s not get ahead too quickly.

When Intervention Is Needed

Think about the two types of situations where intervention is needed.

First, if you’re stuck. You know what you want, you know what you have to do, but you’re simply not doing it. You’re procrastinating. You’re dodging the issue. You’re coming up with excuses.

In short, you’re stuck. There’s no progress happening.

You’ve been there. I’ve been there. Everybody we know has been there.

The REAL problem is when you stay stuck.

Water that stops moving gets contaminated. Blood that stops moving creates disease. Cars that stop moving create a traffic jam. It’s a law of nature.

So we have to keep ourselves and others moving.

We have to know how to get ourselves and others unstuck.

Number two, if you’re feeling like shit for more than a few days. Mid to long-term. Depressed. Pissed. Anxious. Helpless. Frustrated.

Number two leads inevitably to number one. In some cases, vice-versa. If you’re stuck too long, you start feeling horrible.

Then, the vicious cycle starts.

Can’t let either happen.

As we talked about above, a belief or a set of beliefs is at the root of both.

You asked for it

I got some emails last week from subscribers who really want to master modeling.

OK. So you want to master a skill. How are you going to do it?

You better be able to answer that.

Two syllables: practice.

Practice the modeling skills. Like crazy.

Here’s a primer so you have them on the tip of your tongue.

Figure out a skill you want to master. It can be anything. Public speaking, juggling, negotiating, hiring, hypnotizing, surfing, playing basketball, investing, firing, writing, and so on, ad infinitum.

Now, identify someone to model.

If you want to master juggling, identify a master juggler. If you want to master investing, find a master investor.

Cut a deal with your model. Explain you want to master their skill. Explain to them what they stand to gain from helping you (you did think about that, didn’t you?).

Then, put yourself in their presence while they’re performing.

Critical key: Don’t let them explain to you what they’re doing. If they do, don’t believe a word they say!

You want to absorb what they do, not what they say they do, and even less of the theory or story behind it all. Forget it!

In the case of an investor, sit quietly and watchful behind her as she goes through her stock analysis routine. When in doubt as to what she’s thinking or deciding, gently ask what she’s considering (gently is very important. You don’t want to totally break her pattern or else you might screw up her strategy.). You want to practically become at one with her.

Then, on next passes, you might want to have a laptop with you and go through the motions yourself.

Repeat until you feel you’re analyzing stocks just like her.

How would you know you got it? When you conduct an analysis by yourself, show it to her and she says: “That’s exactly what I would have picked.”

Then, you can go on to code your model and make it explicit using NLP.

That’s it!

That’s the straight line to modeling a pattern.

Ants, Symphonies and Honeycombs

Do you know the difference between complex and complicated?

I’ll give you my definition.

Complex means there are a great many elements involved.

Complicated means there are a ton of rules and criteria to take into account.

The first explains how skyscrapers are built.

The second explains why it is impossible to stay in a relationship more than a few days.

Complex is amazing. It’s mindblowing.

It’s ants traveling back and forth in neat little lines. It’s bees building their symmetrical combs. It’s a Mozart symphony.

Complicated is a pain in the ass.

It’s government bureaucracy. It’s that boy(girl)friend that needs to do sixty things before leaving the house. It’s getting a publishing deal.

Let’s talk about simple.

Do you think simple is the antonym of complex or complicated?

Complicated, of course.

When we say something is simple, we mean that it’s devoid of a billion different rules and options. It’s straightforward.

Complex structures are built, mostly, out of simple material following simple processes.

Following a simple algorithm, these structures complexify over time.

Watch it in action:

It’s surreal.

And did you pay attention to the music in the background?

It was composed using only 12 notes.

Think about this: to this day, humans are still composing new music following brand new patterns using just these 12 building blocks.

Surreal!

It also works for you and your career.

You can build an entire career out of a single skill.

Just one.

Think of sushi chef Jiro Ono.

Think of soccer defenders.

Simple. Done over and over and over.

Amazing structures. Amazing results.

Forget complicated. Forget too many moving parts.

The Sounds of Silence

Mine was amazing. My wife had to travel for five days to meet with her band in Rio and discuss the upcoming tour.

I was by myself with my two children.

And I got to experience something I hadn’t in a long time: approaching their presence from silence.

Before I met my wife and got married and had kids, I was very much into meditation, fasting, and extreme forms of spirituality.

In other words, I lived in silence.

My wife and I have complimentary natures. She’s very much connected to the world of form. So our house is usually full of sensory stimuli, sound, smells and tastes.

But this weekend, I zeroed the volume on all that.

Turned off the noise.

Got my kids off TV.

It was unbelievable to feel how presence took over. How we started filling the environment.

I was able to merge with the kids in a new way. Magnificient, might I add.

This changes the premise. It changes the frame. It changes the worldview.

When you become aware of those shifts and you can induce them at will, behold the changes you can help others achieve.

People think that Milton Erickson was just a hypnotist. In fact, he was a master at these high-level interventions.

He gave people tasks that altered their frame. The new frame automatically induced the change they desired.

If you haven’t yet, read Phoenix. It’s an account of those kinds of interventions by Master Erickson. You’ll thank me for it.

Meanwhile, start observing the frame in which you or your clients live.

That’s the bubble. Everything happens inside it.

Change the bubble, change everything.

PS: My wife recorded her album with the who’s who of Brazilian Choro music. It’s very rich lyrically and musically. After listening to it over 100 times, I can still extract new elements from it.

It’s just like organic, nutritious food, except for the ears.

Do you know nothing?

NLP revolves around one activity: modeling.

You knew that, didn’t you?

What most NLP students don’t know is that modeling NLP-style differs in one specific way.

More about that in a second…

John Grinder has a unique focus in NLP. He’s really interested on top performance in a variety of fields. He thrives on that.

In fact, that’s pretty much all he cares about.

What annoys him about the field, right now, is that very few people care about that.

The big focus is therapeutic protocols that he modeled with Bandler back in the 1970’s.

People find that a big deal.

The big deal, he says, is modeling. That’s where we find the juice.

So Grinder is one of the few people who teach the original brand of NLP modeling. Just every once in a while.

He emphasizes that Pracs must learn to enter a know-nothing state.

It’s a state in which you experience no internal dialogue. In which you’re focused on your senses, in the present. In which you are COM-PLETE-LY available.

If you’re familiar with Carlos Castañeda, you’ll recognize this as “stopping the world.”

Bruce Lee used to start off with new students with a specific routine.

He’d take out two cups and fill them with water. Then, he’d put a cup on the lap of the student and say:

“That cup is you. It contains all of your knowledge. This cup is me. It contains all of my knowledge.”

At that point, he would take his cup and start pouring his water into the student’s cup.

The student would then yell for him to stop!

Bruce looked at him straight in the eye, picked up the student’s cup, tossed out the water and put back the cup on his lap.

He then poured the water into it.

There was space available. Nothing left.

Zip. Gone.

All prejudices, out the door.

Clean slate.

That’s the state we get you into with the Mental Spa.

That’s where the learning begins.

Stopping the world means shutting out internal dialogue and, with it, all your baggage, background and personal history.

Castañeda taught it with wisdom.

Grinder picked up on it.

That’s the difference that makes the difference in NLP modeling.

When you enter the know-nothing state, you’re able to absorb the patterns of excellence that you want to assimilate and code.

It’s not just observing and recording what you “think” is happening.

There is no thinking. It’s all doing.

NLP modeling is a full-contact sport.
